Back in 2009, a British artist, Kirstie Macleod had undertaken an ambitious project for the women called ‘The Red Dress Project’. This project was funded by the British Council and took a decade to get completed. What is so unique about it you ask?
This dress has travlled all around the world to get completed. The dress has been worked upon by 202 artists from over 28 countries of the world. It has also been exhibited at multiple galleries and museums in Dubai, London, Mexico and Paris.
The motive behind this project is something I call as ‘Womenocracy’ It is created by women all around the world for the women. The aim of this dress was to connect with women from all background, culture and caste. To empower them by giving them a platform to express themself and hearing them out.
The artists were commissioned to illustrate an element of their own identity by telling a story they would want the world to know. The artisans included refugees in Palestine, victims of civil war in Kosovo, Rwanda and DR Congo, individuals in South Africa, Kenya, Japan, Paris, Sweden, and Peru, upmarket studios in Mumbai and Saudi Arabia, artists in Wales and Colombia.
All artists were paid for their work and we look forward to seeing the comprehensive details of this red riding hood dress.
