A Very Collectible Rolex Paul Newman Daytona 'John Player Special' is Estimated to Fetch in Excess of USD 1.2 Million at a Forthcoming Auction

British-founded American Multinational Corporation Sotheby's has disclosed the inclusion of an ultra-rare Rolex Reference 6241 Paul Newman Daytona 'John Player Special' in its upcoming important Watches auction in New York on June 15, 2022.

In the same family

Prior to the sale, the auction house displayed the exceptionally well-preserved Rolex in a public exhibition in Dubai. According to Sotheby's, the watch has been in the same family for 50 years and this is the first time the Rolex has been offered for sale, making this specimen even more attractive to collectors.

What makes 'John Player Special', so special?

Between the late 1960s and the early 1970s, Rolex is thought to have produced around 3,000 copies of the Ref 6241. However, only a few number were manufactured in this arrangement, making the Paul Newman Daytona 'John Player Special' one of the most sought-after Rolex timepieces. Rarely does one of the known instances appear at auction. Sotheby's last sold a Paul Newman Daytona 'John Player Special' for close to USD1.6 million.

The particular luxury timepiece that will be auctioned has a pre-sale estimate of USD 600,000-USD 1.2 million and it will be no surprise if it sells for much more.

Highly Collectible

The Paul Newman Daytona 'John Player Special' is highly collectible because of its distinctive dial arrangement and polish. The watch was dubbed the 'John Player Special' due to its black and gold contrasting Paul Newman dial, which matched the classic Lotus Formula 1 livery, which was painted black with a gold JPS insignia. The dial contrasts nicely with the gold casing, giving the clock a very eye-catching appearance. In addition to the ultra-rare Rolex, the June auction will include an F.P. Journe Chronometer, a Vacheron Constantin Ref 80251, and a Richard Mille Ref RM005.

Brilliantly Exceptional

Blending one of Rolex's best designs with an extremely fascinating heritage, this exceptional John Player Special Daytona is a watch of colossal significance and unmatched in every way. It is quite unusual that a Rolex Daytona of this variation, caliber, and condition would ever come across another with such inquisitive expert pedigree.
