Royal Oak: From Iconoclast to Icon is a commemorative book published by Audemars Piguet and Assouline to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak.
A trip through six decades of innovative art, architecture, fashion, music, and culture, paralleling the Royal Oak's growth.
Written by Bill Prince, an award-winning cultural journalist and former deputy editor of British GQ, the book presents the Royal Oak's history from a broader cultural perspective, shedding light on new archival materials unearthed by Audemars Piguet's Heritage department and exclusive testimonies of long-standing brand friends.
A NEW VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL OAK
The book recounts how the Royal Oak, with its hand-polished stainless steel exterior encasing the era's smallest self-winding mechanical movement, caused a sensation upon its introduction in 1972 and shined around the globe for decades.
Although first seen as an iconoclast, the Royal Oak quickly gained a following among the free-spirited young, who appreciated the watch's bold combination of technical advancements and traditional workmanship. This wristwatch has since been a canvas for innovation, interacting with art, music, architecture, and sports, and has attained icon status inside and outside the watchmaking industry.
Furthering the Royal Oak's unique cultural journey, the book also provides voice to "Generation Royal Oak," a group of watch enthusiasts who came of age after the watch's introduction and whose accomplishments mirror the worldwide cultural movement that inspired it. Among the notable members of this group are Kevin Hart, Bjarke Ingels, Elle Macpherson, Mark Ronson, Serena Williams, and Ning Zetao.
