BANGAROO: Prada Bans Kangaroo Skins & Valentino Shuns Alpaca Wool

Kangaroos will be hopping and running around with sheer joy on hearing this spectacular piece of news. Come 2021, one of the biggest luxury fashion houses in the world, Prada, will put an end to using materials from animals in the process of creating their fashion products.

Another big fashion label, Valentino, will also put an end to the usage of wool sourced from Alpacas (A South American Camelid Mammal).

As the call for sustainable luxury and fair treatment of animals gains rapid  momentum across the fashion world, there are many iconic fashion brands that have announced their decision to go fur-free in all their activities.

For a brief backstory, The Prada Group is a 107 year old Italian fashion powerhouse and houses a list of extremely popular brands such as Prada, Miu Miu, Church’s, and Car Shoe. In a recent development Prada has told Italian animal rights group Lega Antivivsezione Italiana (LAV) its decision to terminate the use of Kangaroo leather in its activities. This is an extremely empathetic decision that will surely reduce the agonizing plight of this beautiful animal from down under.

The Horror behind K-Leather

Just imagine being shot and terribly wounded. Then being mercilessly
de-skinned so that your skin can be used to fashion somebody else’s clothes.
Already sounds horrifyingly gruesome, doesn’t it?

According to PETA, millions of Kangaroos are killed and maimed annually, and their hide, including that of their joeys’ (kids’), is peeled off and used to create designer garments. This particular skin is known as K-leather.

The horrific images of burnt Kangaroo bodies and the loss of their habitats during major bushfires in Australia in recent times have brought the overall plight of this timid animal in the eyes of the Australian public, and it is high time they did! People are now demanding a complete ban on the use of kangaroos’ skins and termination of their continual heart breaking slaughter in the name of fashion.

PETA has expressed utmost delight with regards to Prada’s decision to stop Kangaroo killings and the usage of Kangaroo skin in its products.

As a matter of fact, the demand for animal skin in the global fashion industry has caused terrible suffering in and butchering of many animals & reptiles including ostriches, crocodiles, snakes and various others.

The beloved fashion brand Valentino creates some of its exquisite products using wool extracted from Alpacas, a Lama like animal having a soft and lustrous fibre-like covering on its body. This wool is literally plucked off living Alpacas that are bred in Alpaca farms located in Mallkini, Peru.

In a recent update PETA confirmed that Alpacas receive inhuman treatment during the shearing process, causing a huge uproar throughout the globe. Valentino has now pledged that it will completely terminate the use of Alpaca wool for its fashion garments.
