Producing Timepieces of the Highest Quality Since 1832, Switzerland' The UR-120 open satellite, launched by URWERK, refines and extends the UR-110 collection's underlying concept. Mr. Spock's Vulcan culture served as inspiration for the clock's USD 101,000 satellite display (a fictitious character from the Star Trek media series). It requires satellites to break apart so that each may rotate on its own axis.
The UR-120 has a smooth top and a sapphire glass case that is 44 mm in length, 47 mm in width, and 15.8 mm in thickness. When the satellite is taken apart, two square studs are seen. They form a V, mimicking the Vulcan salute that led to the UR-120's moniker. When the studs are unlocked, they each rotate on their own axis before closing to reveal the next hour marker.
Each satellite counter-rotates so that the watch face remains upright and readable, and each stud spins independently of the others inside the watch's inner carousel. The satellite carousel spins to the right of the minute track sector on the right side of the case. The hour and minute are represented by the satellite's orientation and position on the scale.
The UR-20.01 standard, central carousel has three satellite-carrying arms. There is an hour marker on each of the satellite's four faces. As it moves from the minute track to the left side of the case, a switch is triggered, causing the satellite face to flip. The latter shows its true nature via a unique chain of kinematics.
The UR-120 has a two-piece housing made up of a caseback and a bezel that snap together. Lateral screws serve to secure them together.
The lugs on this new watch may be moved around. URWERK has put a spring inside the 6 o'clock one, which helps the strap stay in place on the wrist. Calfskin was used to create the strap, and a ballistic pattern was stamped onto it.
The first lot of UR-120 produced looked almost completely grey. The top of the watch, called the bezel, is made of sandblasted steel for durability and a unique look. The base is made of sandblasted titanium and represents a radical departure in aesthetics. The Star-shaped Windfanger, which regulates the quantity of automatic winding, is on full display via a small window. The large central medallion is finished in two ways: deep grooves all the way around, and a plaque with the URWERK monogram at the 9 o'clock position.
