Sweden's Treehotel
BIG, a Danish architectural firm, has produced a concept for a hotel room surrounded by 350 birdhouses for Sweden's Treehotel. The birdhouse-wrapped hotel room, dubbed Biosphere, will become the hotel's eighth room. The hotel is nestled in a lonely area in Swedish Lapland. The architectural company hopes that the room's 350 birdhouses would motivate visitors to put birdhouses in their own yards.
"By constructing a treetop hotel room with a façade of bird nests, Biosphere hopes to halt the decline of the bird population in the Swedish woodlands and instead improve the biosphere and natural environment,"BIG said.
The hotel room will be suspended above the ground and connected to the treetop entrance by a bridge.
350 birdhouses of all sizes will sprout from the cubic construction, forming a spherical cloud that will encircle the space.
As per Ulf hman, head of the Norrbotten Ornithological Association inventories conducted in Norrbotten County by both ornithologists and the County Administrative Board indicated a decline in a variety of bird populations.
"Forestry has resulted in a decline in the amount of natural holes in trees used by nesting birds. Thus, the placement of bird nests is a critical precaution to adopt."
"Additionally, as a result of climate change, the bug boom occurs earlier in the year, and by the time the birds' eggs hatch, the boom has gone. Feeding is a critical support mechanism for birds that migrate to Northern Sweden in the winter and need food "Continuing, he said.
"Demonstrating the usage of bird nests and feeding is beneficial, not only at the Treehotel, but also for individuals to put near their houses. Treehotel's effort to implement such steps may motivate its guests to do the same."
The hotel room covers 34 square metres on the inside and has a material palette inspired by the surrounding natural and timber elements.
The hotel room's split-level, mezzanine-style arrangement will have a living space on the bottom level and a sleeping area on the top level.
Triple-glazed, full-height windows, as well as glass ceilings and floors, providing numerous opportunities for birding, while a roof terrace offers panoramic views of the forest.
"I had the opportunity to spend a few days and nights in some of the Treehotels rooms before to the epidemic and came away feeling rejuvenated by the entire immersion in nature," BIG creator Bjarke Ingels remarked.
"I couldn't help but wonder if there was a way to further the immersion - and almost immediately, the notion of allowing not just human visitors, but also the local bird and bat population to inhabit a circular swarm of nests sprang to life."
Currently, Treehotel consists of seven architect-designed treetop hotel rooms hanging from and around pine tree trunks.
Among the other rooms are a mirrored glass box by Tham & Videgrd Arkitekter, a massive nest by Inrednin Gsgruppen, and a charred-timber treehouse by Snhetta.
The bird box-enclosed chamber was disclosed in response to bird experts' calls for legislation to reduce bird fatalities caused by glass facades and architecture. Hundreds of migratory birds perished in late 2021 after colliding with New York City's glass skyscrapers.
Among BIG's other amazing initiatives is this building in the metaverse, Viceverse, a virtual workplace for media giant Vice Media Group.
The Biosphere is a two-person suite that features a double bed, a living area, a shower with incinerating toilet, and a sauna. It is now under development and is scheduled to open in May 2022, with nightly prices beginning at USD 1,269 per night.
