Mumbai, October 10, 2022:
With an emphasis on tranquil island life and the beauty of a Maldivian hamlet, the award-winning Four Seasons Resorts Kuda Huraa welcomes visitors with a lagoon, flower gardens, and a private spa island in a village setting.
Didier Jardin, a veteran of the hospitality industry who has been with the Four Seasons since 1994, is now the resort's General Manager.
Born in La Ferte Bernard, France, this sailor, diver, and firefighter; sky diver, and adrenaline addict, Didier Jardin spent his formative years in France's Loire Valley, a region renowned for its magnificent castles and Sancerre and Pouilly Fume wines.
With the realisation that a profession in hospitality would allow him to travel the globe, he began a two-year apprenticeship to become a fine-dining server and then relocated to Paris to practise his trade. He studied hotel management for three years, getting a CFA Food and Beverage Diploma from Chartres, France and a Hotel Management Diploma from Lasalle College in Montreal.
"After graduation, marriage, and three harsh winters, we yearned for a warmer existence. Didier remembers a place with waterfalls, beaches, and a jungle. His wife and husband packed bags and a tent "just in case we ran out of money" before flying to Hawaii. It was a daring decision. "I applied everywhere in the islands and received job offers from a beachside Mexican restaurant and Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea."
"In retrospect, I made the correct decision," he adds with a grin.Nearly three decades later, Didier's eleventh Four Seasons assignment is the Four Seasons Resort Maldives in Kuda Huraa. From the beaches of Santa Barbara, Bora Bora, Mauritius, and Hualalai to the urban landscapes of New York, Cairo, and Chicago – where his twin girls were born - he is well on his way to reaching his ambition of working for Four Seasons in every area where the company operates.
People are essential to Didier's concept of success. "Success depends on the satisfaction of your staff; if you get that right, everything else will fall into place," he asserts strongly. As the inaugural general manager of the architectural masterpiece that is the Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait, he travelled to fifteen other nations to assemble the perfect staff.
His belief?
"You can construct everything from scratch, but you cannot manufacture spirit; that must come from the people you employ.
"Speaking about spirit, he adds of his island home, "Kuda Huraa reminds me of my childhood home, a 200-person hamlet"
"That true feeling of unity and togetherness, of going home, of people doing things because it's their life and not their job. It is a place to exchange tales and recollections. When everyone lives and works on-site, life is extremely different: our staff is like a family, and our visitors are like relatives that come to visit. Here, you are at work when you are at home and home when you are at work. The heightened feeling of connectedness is what gives Kuda Huraa its soul.
"Didier's leadership philosophy is based on connection and his enthusiasm for "giving back and offering opportunity."
Having begun his career as an apprentice, he is particularly interested in the Four Seasons Resorts Maldives Apprenticeship programme, and his open-door policy supports his ambition to be considered a member of the team.
He says, "We're all born the same way and we all have a task." "I am tough, fair, and adaptable, yet I prioritise having fun. A nice work atmosphere is the greatest motivator of all.
