Marimekko, a Finnish lifestyle brand, stated that it has been collaborating with recycling company Rester Oy to produce textile fibres from its end-of-life materials.
Rester's recycling plant in Paimio, Finland, repurposes materials from Marimekko's own textile printing factory and sewing business in Helsinki.
The collaboration aligns with Marimekko's objective of establishing a value chain that promotes a circular economy, the company said in a statement.
"Our objective is to consistently minimise waste, and this effort begins at the design table,"said Riika Wikberg, Marimekko's chief business development officer.
"Efforts are undertaken to maximise the recovery and recycling of trash generated during manufacturing."
Wikberg said that the business is also investigating the possibility of incorporating recycled fibres into new goods.
"We hope that in the future, timeless and sustainable items will be created in harmony with the environment, in accordance with the circular economy's principles,"she concluded.
The procedure is closely aligned with recently announced EU legislation requiring the separate collection of textile waste by 2025, a goal Finland has previously set for the beginning of 2023.
