Girl in a Yellow Sweater by Goan Artist FN Souza Sells For A Record Setting INR 14.4 Crore in Unique Auction at Panjim

‘Girl in a Yellow Sweater' by Goan artist went for INR 14.4 crore at an auction, while ‘La Source' by fellow Goan Antonio Xavier Trindade sold for INR 73.2 lakh, a world record for the artist's work.
The two works of art were auctioned off by AstaGuru on April 29-30, 2022 and May 2-3, 2022. Souza's work was originally estimated at INR 6 crore but ended up becoming the auction's top seller. The sculpture was created in 1957 and was owned by Souza's major patron Harold Kovner. For the first time, the artwork was auctioned. The Profile Of A Man and Flowers sold for INR 5.4 crore each.
For his nearly life-like texture and feeling of closeness, Trindade was termed the ‘Rembrandt of the East'.
According to AstaGuru Auction House Vice President Sneha Gautam, several of these rare avant-garde works by highly sought-after Indian modernists had auction debuts.
The auctions created world records for António Xavier Trindade, A. Ramachandran, and Jeram Patel. 'Tanava' and 'La Source' by S.H. Raza, as well as an oil painting by Jehangir Sabavala and other pieces by M. F. Hussain, including 'Lovers,' (INR 1.9 crore) a scene from the classic Indian film Mughal-e-Azam were also auctioned.
In April, the ‘Masters Legacy' auction sold all the art works, earning INR 67.73 crore, while the ‘Collectors Choice' sale on May 2-3 netted INR 30.2 crore.
‘Mutation' by Souza sold for INR 2.2 crore. The 2012 Picasso/Souza exhibition at Vadehra Art Gallery included this oil and mixed media on board depiction of Souza's reoccurring topic of human heads.
‘Girl in a Yellow Sweater' is definitely a price worthy work of art indeed.
