Impact of the curfew on luxury stores in New York

During the curfew looters raided and targeted some of the top luxury stores in New York.  Before the curfew came into effect, fashion store Michael Kors on Fifth Avenue was attacked along with stores like Nike and Lego located across Midtown. Even the stores in south of Manhattan were attacked. As per New York Times the flagship Macy’s department store was also attacked by the looters.

The local NY1 television showed some young attackers running out of a store before being caught red-handed by the police. The police have confirmed that hundreds of people were arrested, and numerous stores were attacked and looted.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York state governor Andrew Cuomo declared a curfew to take control of this un-acceptable situation. After the successful implementation of the curfew de Blasio confirmed on NY1, “The city is fully under control, and overwhelmingly calm and peaceful”.

Following the economic capital New York, around 40 cities across the United States have imposed curfews to tackle the violent protest against the police, there were triggered by the brutal killing of African American George Floyd by a police officer in Minnesota.
Post the curfew a peaceful demonstration was held in front of the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.

In reaction to the vandalism caused in New York, President Donald Trump said that he was dispatching heavily armed military personnel top stop the rioting and this was widely condemned by Mayor de Blasio. De Blasio in his statement said that, “I don’t think it’s a statement from the last few hours that has caused all this, I think its what he’s done for years that has contributed”.
