Bengaluru-based William Penn, the most popular Indian brand of luxury writing instruments and lifestyle accessories, has acquired Sheaffer, a famed American producer of luxury fountain pens in business for 110 years.
The Indian company entered the market for business accessories by acquiring Lapis Bard, a luxury English leather bag brand. The company's products now include leather bags, wallets, cufflinks, watch cases, and pen sets with intricate carvings.
William Penn will take over Sheaffer's manufacturing, marketing, and retailing operations in 75 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Malaysia, Thailand, South Africa, Japan, and India, making this not only a historic acquisition, but also one of the largest in the premium writing instrument industry at approximately Rs 450 crore. The A.T. Cross Company's newly acquired inventory includes premium writing equipment, diaries, and gift packages. William Penn plans to expand Sheaffer's market share from 15 percent to 30 percent during the next three years.
Mysuru engineering graduate and former IBM employee Nikhil Ranjan founded William Penn in 2002. They wanted to provide Indian clients with a taste of the finest brands, so they opened their first store in Koramangala, Bengaluru, stocking brands like as Montblanc, Caran D'ache, Parker, Cross, Sheaffer, Pelikan, Faber Castell Design, Moleskine, and Sailor. For instance, the Fisher Space Pen may be utilised in any condition, including space, underwater, and at very high or low temperatures. William Penn offers Ranga Pens, an illustrious manufacturer from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu renowned for producing high-quality fountain pens. However, since it lacks a scalable manufacturing strategy, it is hesitant to develop alliances with domestic organisations.
The company was curiously named after the founder of Pennsylvania. William Penn had deep roots in both American and European history; he was also a prolific writer and advocate for religious tolerance. The ultimate objective of the organisation was to offer well-known Western writing tool brands to the Indian market. The creator observes that it is also the name of the most renowned man in the history of literature, William Shakespeare.
In addition to its 25 brick-and-mortar boutiques, William Penn's upscale merchandise is available on its e-commerce platform and on other notable shopping sites.
Beginning in 2011, the company's signature experience is allowing consumers to test out every pen on display. The next year, it included an unique limited edition exhibit and a workshop given by Nobuyoshi Nagahara, Sailor's renowned nib master.
In 2016, Pennline, a house brand devoted to creating innovative stationery, was presented to the market. The Quikrite journaling system and wireless power bank organisers have made it to shop shelves. Originally founded as a high-end retailer of excellent writing tools, the company has broadened its product selection to include items from a larger range of brands and categories. For 2019, the firm has placed a significant focus on its in-house product customisation services, such as curating the product catalogue based on the customer's prior purchases and providing branded items with the customer's preferred logo, engram, and taped name.
William Penn was able to weather the pandemic by strengthening its online presence; to honour the company's 20th anniversary, it developed a unique initiative called "Words that Matter," in which consumers were asked to express the words that are most significant to them (on January 11, 2022).
Nikhil Ranjan sees the new acquisition as a good opportunity to enhance Sheaffer's products in India in response to customer demand and regional preferences.
We are experiencing a period of immense pride. We are delighted to be extending our business with such an illustrious American firm. I remember well the early years of William Penn. Our objective was to give Indian customers with access to a degree of excellence hitherto unattainable in India. The notion of teaming up with a global giant like Sheaffer sounded like a pipe dream at the time. We've made significant progress over the last two decades due to everyone's tremendous work, inexhaustible excitement, and steadfast commitment to excellence. It gives me great pleasure to announce that we are now one of the world's top producers of writing tools.
The American brand has a 15% market share in India, where quality writing instruments cost more than $10. To become India's leading market for Sheaffer within three years, we want to double our existing market share. As a global player, we want to modify the rules of competition, added Ranjan.
