Love Coffee and Gelato? You Will Love Affogato

Affogato - For the love of Coffee & Gelato

Affogato, an upscale new gelateria, has made its debut in the heart of Khar's busy streets. This one-of-a-kind gelateria takes its name from the delectable Italian Coffee-Gelato-based beverage Affogato al caffè, more commonly known as Affogato. Suren Joshi and Shalini Rattan, the cafe's creators, are at the forefront of this intriguing new establishment.

Shalini is the mastermind behind the artisanal gelato parlour, Crèmeyum Creamery. Suren is responsible for the I Think Fitness chain of fitness centres as well as a number of popular eateries in Mumbai, including Joshi House, Javaphile, The Conservatory, Pali Bhavan, Pali Village Cafe, and the former Su Casa.

Through this contemporary patisserie, the proprietors have brought together, for the very first time in India, the three definitive superpowers of Italian cuisine: The Bread, The Gelato, and The Coffee. Not to be confounded with a typical gelato shop, Affogato is the ideal gathering for all the gourmands in the city. This 600-square-foot gelateria, which is also famously pet-friendly, can accommodate up to 25 visitors between its indoor and outdoor seating areas.

"I sampled Shalini's gelato, which was not only extremely tasty but also nutritious. I knew immediately that we had to collaborate on something thrilling. I've been contemplating expanding the pastry selection in Bombay and designing a space where one can enjoy a conversation over coffee and sweets. So I figured, why not combine the coffee from Javaphile and her gelato to create something spectacular? "

says Suren Joshi, co-founder of Affogato.

At the heart of Affogato's menu is Gelato, the headliner of the show. This iconic Italian delicacy has won the affections of people all over the globe, and now connoisseurs in Mumbai can experience the same authentic flavour in their own city. At Affogato, the gelato is prepared using traditional techniques to ensure that each portion reflects the culinary heritage of Italy. Importing natural ingredients such as vanilla beans from Madagascar, blueberries from South America, strawberries from Egypt and pistachios from Sicily, the team behind Affogato has raised the bar in order to provide you with authentic, high-quality gelato.

What's more intriguing is that the majority of the gelati here are made with imported Sugar Alcohols (a form of innocuous natural additives). There is something for every dessert aficionado here, from ubiquitous flavours like Belgian Chocolate, Salted Butter Caramel, and Tiramisu to more exotic options like Almond Praline, Jamun Sorbet, Mango, and Strawberry Cheesecake. In addition to gelati, vegan and keto-friendly sorbets are also available.

"With Affogato, we hope to introduce Mumbai to the art of authentic gelato, as found on the streets of Sicily, and inspire a passion among the patrons for exquisite ice creations. Co-founder and Gelatiere Shalini Rattan, who is certified in the Advanced levels of Gelato Making by the Carpigiani Gelato University in Italy, explains, "We have created a sweet paradise that will intrigue you, tantalise your taste buds, and leave you wanting more."

When a portion of chilly and velvety gelato is drenched in a dose of freshly brewed espresso, the result is a gorgeous combination that the Italians call Affogato al caffè. This new gelateria offers a wide variety of this outstanding beverage to suit a variety of tastes. Whether you're in the mood for classic flavours such as Madagascar Vanilla and Belgian Chocolate, or for something more exotic such as Salted Butter Caramel, this new Bandra hotspot has you covered.

Siddhesh Advilkar, the barista behind Affogato's extensive coffee menu, has curated some excellent options. If you prefer your coffee to warm your heart, we recommend the Sea salt Mocha, the Spiced Latte, or the Espresso Hot Chocolate. However, if you're seeking to beat the Mumbai heat with a chilled beverage, you must try the Tiramisu Frappé, the Toffee nut Frappé, or the Mint Mocha Frappé.

The delectable patisserie menu at Affogato was meticulously designed by Jasirah Dalvi and Faraaz Engineer. Jasirah, a Chef and Patissier, has worked closely with Italian cuisine for the past eight years, whereas Faryaz, a Patissier and Boulanger, has developed a taste for international delicacies while working in Bahrain for nearly ten years. The menu features a variety of classic European baked delicacies, such as Cantucci, Almond Croissants, Pain au Chocolat, Cinnamon Rolls, and the chef's special Carrot Cake, due to their combined substantial experience.

Elegant and carefully curated interiors by Kasturi Wagh and Vineet Hingorani of kaviar:collaborative will convey you to the heart of Italy the moment you step inside this charming gelateria. This is what they have to say:

"With Affogato, we investigated the concept of a gelato and coffee establishment masquerading as a basement art gallery. The space is defined by a minimal monochromatic volume with textures and gentle curves inspired by gelato swirls. Comparable to how artworks and sculptures are displayed atop pedestals in an art gallery, the assortment of sorbet and coffee take centre stage atop the collection of stone blocks. We believed in treating the ingredients of 'affogato' as works of art rather than as ordinary consumables by designing a space to celebrate it."

So Gelato is simply ice cream, correct? No.

Gelato contains a greater quantity of milk and a smaller quantity of cream. It has a silkier and gentler texture than ice cream and a reduced fat content. Affogato guarantees a pleasant and enticing atmosphere in which customers can gratify their sweet appetite without feeling regretful about consuming excessive sugar or calories!
