30-day Weaver Training Program For Ladakh Women Artisans

March 2023

OBEETEE Carpets, an industry leader in hand-woven rugs, has concluded its 30-day weaver training programme for women artisans in Ladakh. The training programme was a government-led initiative to empower women artisans in Ladakh and provide them with an opportunity to learn new skills during the winter season, when they have downtime from household work.

15 days of training were performed in Leh, and another 15 days were conducted at Kargil. The local craftsmen knew only Tibetan weaving, and OBEETEE Carpets' master weavers instructed them in Tibetan knotting skills.

Kanhaiya Lal, the Tibetan master weaver for OBEETEE Carpets, and Ramesh Maurya, the Persian weaver for OBEETEE Carpets, led the training programme. They shared their expertise and knowledge with the women artisans, who were eager to learn and improve their weaving skills.

The training programme sought to build a community of competent craftsmen who could make high-quality, hand-woven carpets that match international standards. Through this program, OBEETEE Carpets hopes to support the Ladakhi economy and provide women artisans with sustainable employment opportunities.

"We are delighted to have completed this 30-day training programme for women artisans of Ladakh,"

said Angelique Dhama, CEO of OBEETEE Carpets - Retail

"It was a fulfilling experience to witness the eagerness and enthusiasm of the women to learn new techniques and improve their weaving skills. We are confident that this training will help them create beautiful, hand-woven rugs that meet international standards and provide them with sustainable livelihoods."

OBEETEE Carpets is devoted to assisting local communities and encouraging traditional weaving skills. The organisation intends to continue empowering women artisans in Ladakh and other regions of India.
