The Prince’s Foundation recently teamed up with leading luxury retailer Yoox Net-a-Porter to create a sustainable fashion line called Modern Artisan, which is made primarily to be long-lasting yet luxurious.
The collection reflects a unique combination of promoting sustainability and offering opportunities to those artisans and designers who are seeking to showcase their skill in the fashion industry.
As per the press release by Jacqueline Farrell, The Prince’s Foundation Education Director, the capsule collection features a total of 18 pieces, with 10 womenswear and 8 menswear clothing, that have all been carefully designed in Italy and well-crafted in the UK, by skillful designers and craftsman trainees.
The pieces have been designed by students from Politecnico di Milano’s Fashion in process school and has been beautifully crafted by new artisans based in the UK, who have been trained to learn production skills like quality control and industrial sewing in order to successfully bring this collection to life.
The main idea behind creating this sustainable line is to ensure that the clothes are long-lasting and ethically made.
The sustainable collections designs are heavily inspired by the works of Leonardo Da Vinci and the artists legendary drapery skills, using similar knots, pleats and folds to create the main clothing designs.
The woman’s collection features well-fitted suits, smartly designed burnt orange blouses and formal dresses in navy blue, offering something for everyone. While the men’s collection has casual and office wear clothing with button-down cardigans, camel-colored coats, turtlenecks, knitted-wear and more.
Although it features the use of materials such as wool and silk, the primary practices that Modern Artisan run by are fully sustainable. The materials used are organic and locally sourced and are meant to last for a long time.
A true advocate for reusable clothing, Prince Charles has always promoted mending or repairing clothes, rather than simply getting one wear out of it and throwing it away. Keeping this in mind, the main aim of the brand is to create sustainable pieces that can be ‘passed down through generations’.
The key purpose of the collection has always been to reinstate the importance of nature and how natural material can be used in innovative ways to create accessible and sustainable clothing.
