Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Reflects on 2022, a Record-Breaking Year For its Bespoke Business

In 2022, Rolls-Royce Bespoke has had its most prosperous year in the 118-year history of the brand.

Luxury car clients from all over the globe explored the nearly endless possibilities of Bespoke customization, resulting in a record-breaking amount of annual commissions.

Throughout 2022, rare, valuable, and emotionally evocative luxury products caught the dreams of customers. The Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective developed some of the most magnificent instances of Bespoke creativity, drawing inspiration from the aurora borealis, the symbolism of orchids, the iridescent grace of pearls, and the most recent fashion developments, to mention a few.

Every Rolls-Royce manufactured by hand at Goodwood is a Bespoke automobile, tailored to the exact specifications of the client. Commissioning a Rolls-Royce automobile is a deeply personal – and in some instances quite secretive – process, with many customers opting to conceal their masterpiece from public view.

Therefore, the 10 examples shown here are a very modest sample of the wonderful marvels conceived and handcrafted at the Home of Rolls-Royce. Nevertheless, these are among of the best instances of Bespoke workmanship made in 2022, confirming the brand's status as a real House of Luxury.

“Bespoke IS Rolls-Royce, and 2022 was a landmark year in which we recorded the highest value of Bespoke commissions in our history. Reaffirming Rolls-Royce's position as a true House of Luxury and guided by our clients’ imaginations, we brought to life some truly extraordinary examples of our unique craft, each one entirely personal, meaningful and tailor-made to its owner's requirements. Our Bespoke capabilities are unrivalled and unavailable anywhere else in the world, reflected in the fact that our clients are happy to pay, on average, around half a million Euros for their Bespoke motor car. Our Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and artisans is our greatest and most precious asset – truly exceptional people who push the boundaries of craftsmanship, material and technology in their constant pursuit of perfection. Every car which leaves the Home of Rolls-Royce is Bespoke and that is testament to their skill, craftsmanship and boundless creativity.”

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

THE SIX ELEMENTS' PHANTOM

The 'Six Elements' series exemplifies the Phantom Gallery's unique potential. Each of the six one-of-a-kind Phantoms has hand-painted artwork by the acclaimed British artist Sacha Jafri.

Sacha Jafri, renowned for his 'Magical Realism' style, distilled the most powerful elements of nature, including Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Air, together with the sixth element, Humanity. This one-of-a-kind creative endeavour garnered $1.2 million for charity; the inclusion of a unique digital collectable in each Phantom makes this series "the Rolls-Royce that keeps on giving."

AURORA BOREALIS WRAITHS

These two Bespoke Wraiths, inspired by the stunning vision of the northern lights, encapsulate the spirit of nature's famed light display. In an effort to replicate the ethereal splendour of this natural phenomenon, the Bespoke Collective created two new paint colours, Aurora Blue and Borealis Green, that mimic the shimmering magnificence of the arctic nighttime show.

Inside each Wraith are multicoloured Starlight Headliners with blue, green, and white fiberoptic'stars' The Bespoke Collective spent many hours placing the lights such that they evoked the ethereal splendour of the aurora borealis.

PHANTOM PAISLEY GALLERY

This one-of-a-kind gallery depicts a stunning embroidered artwork that reinterprets the delicate paisley pattern that has graced luxury objects for decades. It was entirely hand-embroidered using Navy Blue, Arctic White, and Forge Yellow thread, has 90,000 individual stitches, and required more than 40 hours to finish. Its texture was created by merging run stitching with satin borders. Each piece is comprised of three flawlessly joined components that are positioned with millimeter-perfect accuracy.

CULLINAN FROZEN LAKES

These Bespoke Cullinans provide its inhabitants with the enchanted atmosphere of a winter wonderland. It took over two weeks to delicately hand-paint the fascia and picnic tables with a design inspired by the patterns of fractured ice, with numerous layers painted in various colours, then coated and polished to give a three-dimensional impression. 18 hours were required to get a comparable look on the Bespoke Starlight Headliner.

Crystal over Midnight Sapphire and Blue Crystal over Arctic capture the clarity, sheen, and depth of ice surfaces with their exterior finishes.

GALLERY OF PHANTOM SAPPHIRE ASTRUM

The magnificent one-of-a-kind Gallery by Astrum displays a starburst pattern with solid silver spears emanating from a diamond set in platinum and culminating in pear-shaped sapphires.

The backing is carved with a guilloché pattern in Bleu de Nuit, a rich sapphire lacquer that accentuates the exquisite colours of the precious stones. The Gallery clock's sterling silver frame is likewise adorned with a guilloché design, and a Sapphire Blue lacquer overlay gives the clockface depth and iridescence.

PEBBLE BEACH COLLECTION GHOSTS

Designed to promote Bespoke capabilities at the renowned Pebble Beach meeting in California, these two Ghosts display the iridescence of two glittering finishes: Crystal over Sagano Green and a shimmering finish with gold mica flakes over Sequoia Green.

This incredible depth of colour is the result of six layers of finish, each of which was carefully hand-polished. Before the last two clear coats are done, the Crystal finish is applied, giving a beautiful, multidimensional shimmer with minute bits of colour flecks.

PHANTOM ORCHID – Eternal Grace

This one-of-a-kind Phantom was inspired by the Singapore Orchid, a symbol of tenacity, beauty, and fortitude. This commission's centrepiece is a hand-sculpted Gallery by the award-winning artist Helen Amy Murray, which incorporates three-dimensional silk flowers.

The orchid design is repeated in the inlays and treadplates of the rear picnic table. The exterior Singapore Orchid Pearl White paint was blended with a violet tint and small glass particles to provide a stunning iridescent look, which was further accentuated by an Orchid coachline.

FUX BRIGHT YELLOW DAWN

This brilliant Bespoke Dawn joins a long history of unique orders for Michael Fux, a devoted vehicle collector and longtime fan of the company. The magnificent Fux Bright Yellow, which has been produced particularly for his usage, is included in every aspect of the automobile, including the exterior finish, leather interior, top stitching, two-tone steering wheel, and coloured wheel centres.

PHANTOM PLATINO

The interior of this Bespoke masterpiece, named after the silver-white finish of platinum, is a combination of two different fabrics – one created in an Italian mill to combine durability with a gloriously luxurious appearance, and the other derived from bamboo fibres and chosen for its lustrous finish.

This theme is repeated throughout the Gallery on both materials, which share an original, recurring pattern based on an abstract depiction of the Spirit of Ecstasy. The Starlight Headliner is a one-of-a-kind design in which the'stars' lure the eye backwards, with shooting stars following the sweeping arc of the pattern.

CULLINAN INSPIRED BY FASHION

The 'Cullinan – Inspired by Fashion' Bespoke collection consists of two sets of four automobiles that each represent a distinct fashion-related concept. The distinctive Re-Belle automobiles include exteriors in Lime Green, Gunmetal, Wildberry, and Arctic White, and interiors with Lime Green or Peony Pink accents. The exterior hues of the FuShion automobiles include Military Green, Burnout Grey, Forge Yellow, and Tempest Grey, with Mandarin or Forge Yellow inside accents.

Bespoke designers produced the brand-new Starlight Tailgate for this project. When the tailgate is opened, 192 gently lighted stars are embedded into the perforated leather upholstery, extending the distinctive Starlight Headliner beyond the interior.
