Scents and Sensibility: Luxury Perfumes Are Worn by The Hours of The Day

Perfume is delightful when used in the right moderation and the right time. However, most of us have experienced being knocked out by someone who got carried away and decided to have a shower in them. There are also different fragrances that are graceful at certain times of the day. Here's a small guide on how to choose what kind of scents to carry yourself in, as hours of the day pass by...

Humans love the idea of being recognised by a scent, something that lingers in the room and leaves their identity. For me, as a teenager I decked myself with Very Sexy by Victoria's Secret and as I aged, Touch by Burberry (for men). Sex symbol Marilyn Monroe confessed that she only wore Chanel No. 5 in bed and always identified herself with that fragrance. We can even draw a personality archetype for Coco Chanel when she says the Chanel No.5 was her classic scent. Identifying people and their habits and personality archetype is so much easier when they've told you their favourite scent. It's almost as lucky as you feel when the guy you like tells you his star-sign on the first date.

The Mornings

The mornings are fresh and we get the highest percent of our work done. We'd prefer a more energetic, fresh and humble fragrance in the morning. Waking up early sets you in a determined yet humble mood. It lets you see the beauty in chirping birds, clear blue skies, and you do not even seem to mind the butterflies flying across your face. Out of the 4 notes (fresh notes, floral notes, oriental notes, and woody notes) a combination of fresh and floral would work out the best in the mornings. If you are looking for something fragrant but not too long lasting, may we recommend you an Eau De Cologne. Colognes are sprayed onto your freshly dried body after a shower to your pulse points. Here are some of the best Eau De Colognes for mornings:

1. Costa Azzurra Acqua by Tom Ford

This Tom Ford fragrance evokes an image of warm beaches and salty sea breezes. You will be turning to this fresh and exhilarating scent all spring and summer long.

Fragrance family: Floral, Aqua

Key Notes: Woody, Juniper Berry, Myrtle Oil, Lemon, Cypress Oil and Cistus Absolute

2. Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne by Jo Malone

Escape the everyday along the windswept shore. Waves breaking white, the air fresh with sea salt and spray. Alive with the mineral scent of the rugged cliffs. Mingling with the woody earthiness of sage. Lively, spirited and totally joyful. Wearable at vacations and at work.

Fragrance family: Floral, Woody

Key notes: Lilly, Sage, Sea salt

3. Acqua Di Fiori by Gucci Bloom

Blended by master perfumer Alberto Morillas under the direction of the House’s Creative Director, Gucci Bloom is created to unfold like its name, capturing the rich scent of a thriving garden filled with an abundance of flowers. Tuberose and Jasmine combine with Rangoon Creeper—a unique flower discovered in South India to create a rich fragrance that transports the wearer to an imaginary garden. The scent is presented in a vintage powder pink shade with a green Herbarium print Gucci label appliqué.

Fragrance family: Floral, Fresh

Key notes: Green Galbanum, Cassis buds, Jasmine buds, Rangoon creeper, Tuberose

The Afternoons & Evenings

Scent is personal. What reminds me of the house I stayed in during summer '16 might not remind you of the city lights at Brooklyn bridge. Just like afternoons for some people could mean reading a book by the corner and evenings could be adventurous hikes at mountains. But in general, you'd like to stick to a scent that stays for longer.

Eau De Toilette lasts around 6-8 hours on the skin. key notes of woody, oriental and floral are the perfect combination for afternoon soirées. Wild or quiet, the nature of which you can choose. Something too dull and light might too long to get through. Might we suggest some Eau De Toilettes with keynotes of woody, oriental and floral.

1. Replica Whispers In The Library by Maison Margiela

Whispers in the library evokes the memory of a mysterious library made of antique woodwork perfectly waxed. The slowing down of time between books and the whispers of turning pages.

Inspired by the scent of wax wood and paper, the combination of pepper notes with woody and warm notes of cedar and vanilla recreates the atmosphere of an ancestral library.

Fragrance family: Oriental, Woody

Key notes: Peppery vanilla notes of precious woods

 2. Calandre by Paco Rabanne

Radical, as experimental as Paco Rabanne's fashion, the Calandre perfume is sensation. Fresh, metallic, and necessarily provocative. Foolish, without being bad. Iconoclastic, feminine avant-garde. Introduced in 1969.

Fragrance family: Woody, Floral

Key notes: Green leaves, Bergamot, Rose, Geranium, Cedar, Metal, Amberwood and Lily of the valley

3. Gucci Rush by Gucci

Introduced in 1999, Gucci Rush is a fantasy to be reached through an intoxicating, addictive combination of florals and spices. A sensual burst of Eau De Toilette that makes you feel a 'rush' which was a commonly used drug back in the 80's in America.

Fragrance family: Woody, Floral

Key notes: Gardenia, Freesia, Jasmine, Vanilla, Patchouli

The Nights

You know what they say, sometimes the nights are more colourful than the mornings. Stick to Eau De Parfume for late evenings, it has the highest percentage of fragrance and lowest percentage of water and alcohol. Eau De Parfume at night could remind you of that Jazz club on Manhattan street, that poker evening with whiskey sours and friends or that rooftop lounge where your eyes couldn't get enough of the city skyline.

1. 5th Avenue NYC Live by Elizabeth Arden

Elizabeth Arden 5th Avenue NYC LIVE brings New York City to life. Elegant, strong and experimental. Just like the energy in New York City.

Fragrance family: Woody Musks, Floral

Key notes: Lotus flower enriched with Jasmine. Layered over the lingering warmth of Musk, Amber and Cedarwood.

2. Sauvage by Christian Dior

A moment tinted with a thick blue that unleashes the wildest instincts. At the hour when the wolves come out and the sky is set ablaze, a new magic unfolds. Exudes sensual and mysterious facets.

Fragrance family: Earthy & Woody

Key Notes: Bergamot, Lavender Sichuan Pepper, Vanilla, Nutmeg

2. Replica Soul Of The Forest by Maison Margiela

A resplendent scent for a spiritual retreat in nature.

The vibrations of the sheltered ancient trees lure your imagination as you walk through the depths of a lush forest. Does the forest have a soul? Human awareness stretches its limits owing to an invisible and shapeless presence. This bright Eau de Parfum is part of the Replica Fantasies Collection.

Fragrance family: Woody, Musk

Key notes: Fir Balsam, Citrus and Cedarwood, Pepper, Pimento berries and Blackcurrant buds, moss and Patchouli
