Spectre by Rolls Royce
Rolls Royce Motor Cars created headlines in the second half of 2022 by announcing the start of testing for Spectre, the company's first fully electric vehicle.
Now in 2023 the world has been introduced to Spectre, the world's first ultra-luxury electric super coupé, which is the realisation of an audacious promise and a technical feat of monumental proportions.
Spectre is a significant milestone in Rolls-Royce's evolution, demonstrating that battery-electric technology has reached the stage where it can be used at the pinnacle of automotive excellence, opulence, and performance. It represents a technological and intellectual breakthrough and signifies the iconic brand's commitment to an all-electric future. By the end of 2030, all Rolls-Royce vehicles will be electric, putting internal combustion engines firmly in the past.
Spectre is more than just an electric car; it is a masterpiece of design and engineering. Its ultra-luxurious two-door fastback design pays homage to the legendary Phantom Coupé, while its innovative electric powertrain enhances the classic Rolls-Royce experience.
The "Rolls-Royce 3.0" architecture, the latest version of the brand's design philosophy, underpins the Spectre's advanced capabilities. The all-aluminum "Architecture of Luxury" platform, previously utilised by the Cullinan and Ghost models, was designed from the beginning to accommodate an electric powertrain, enabling for the seamless integration of the Spectre.
Advanced extruded aluminium sections and battery integration increase the spaceframe's rigidity by 30% compared to previous Rolls-Royce models, resulting in a more comfortable travel and superior aerodynamics. The unconventional placement of the battery beneath the floor provides additional soundproofing, resulting in a serene interior.
The Spectre's electric powertrain consists of two powerful Separately Excited Synchronous Motors (SSMs), one in the front and one in the rear, with a combined output equivalent to a 430 kW (584 hp) internal combustion engine. The instantaneous propulsion of the electric motors propels the Spectre from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds, providing a thrilling driving experience.
Rolls-Royce engineers gave careful consideration to Spectre's lineup to ensure that it meets the requirements of their discerning clientele. With a confirmed range of 530 kilometres (329 miles) based on WLTP standards, the Spectre provides Rolls-Royce owners, who typically have access to a variety of vehicles, with a great deal of flexibility.A 195 kW (DC) rapid charger optimises charging time by charging the battery from 10% to 80% in only 34 minutes, and 100 kilometres can be charged in about nine minutes. The commitment to sustainability demonstrated by Spectre transcends its impressive performance. The 102 kWh lithium-ion battery is manufactured with cobalt and lithium derived from controlled sources and renewable energy in its entirety.
The vehicle's thermal management system guarantees optimal battery performance even in adverse climates, while the regenerative braking function increases energy efficiency and enables driving with only one pedal.
With three times as many sender-receiver signals as any previous Rolls-Royce model, Spectre offers a level of connectivity never before seen. Due to its lightning-fast and precise response to road and weather conditions, engineers describe it as "Rolls-Royce in ultra-high definition." During its arduous 2.5-million-kilometer testing programme, extensive testing and refinement assured that every aspect of the vehicle's powertrain and chassis characteristics were perfected to provide an exceptional driving experience.
Decentralised Intelligence, an innovative software architecture, is the foundation of Spectre's technological superiority. Rather than relying on a single central processing unit, this inventive method processes data closer to its source by distributing the load across multiple dedicated control units. With more than 141,200 sender-receiver variables, each with its own dedicated control, Spectre can respond rapidly to driver inputs and adapt to changing road conditions.
A refinement of the legendary Planar System introduced on the Ghost, the Spectre's suspension system orchestrates a symphony of components to deliver Rolls-Royce's signature'magic carpet ride.' On straight roads, the increased torsional rigidity eliminates the requirement for an upper wishbone compensator, enabling each wheel to operate independently. This eliminates undulating motions and reduces disturbances caused by surface defects.
During cornering, the system intelligently couples the components, engages the four-wheel steering, and modifies a number of parameters to ensure optimal stability and tracking.
SPIRIT, a completely redesigned digital architecture, connects Spectre owners to their vehicles like never before. SPIRIT integrates with the brand's Whispers app to facilitate remote interaction with the vehicle, in addition to managing the car's functions. This digital realm also enhances the bespoke experience by enabling customers to match instrument dial hues to the interior colour scheme or exterior finish of the vehicle.
The Spectre's laser-welded, pillarless coach doors are an accomplishment in and of themselves. These 1.5-meter-long doors, the widest ever installed on a Rolls-Royce, are constructed wholly of aluminium in order to achieve the optimal balance between weight reduction and durability. The Effortless Doors power-assisted system, developed by the Ghost, facilitates effortless opening and closing. Before activating complete power assistance, the Spectre's doors open in two phases, allowing passengers to inspect for potential hazards. In addition, a distinguishing feature automatically closes the driver's door when the brake lever is depressed.
The exterior of Spectre is a work of art, borrowing inspiration from haute couture, modern sculpture, and nautical design, among others. The wide, LED-illuminated Pantheon grille produces a mesmerising three-dimensional identifier. The Spirit of Ecstasy figurine contributes to Spectre's exceptional drag coefficient through its aerodynamic profile and meticulous wind tunnel testing. The streamlined fastback design exemplifies elegance and aerodynamic efficiency, as it was inspired by classic automobiles and racing vessels. Spectre is a sight to behold due to its meticulous attention to detail and aesthetically appealing lines.
Comparable to entering a domain of bespoke luxury, Spectre's interior design is reminiscent of entering a mansion. Innovative features such as Starlight Doors, which feature thousands of subtly illuminated stars, generate a celestial atmosphere. The Illuminated Fascia features a nameplate for Spectre that is surrounded by a concentration of stars and emits a mesmerising glow.
The design of the front seating, which was influenced by British tailoring, allows for complementary or contrasting tints with the primary base. Rolls-Royce ensures that every Spectre owner can create an entirely unique and extravagant interior by providing an infinite number of customization options.
