Swiss Company ZENITH Introduces Its Second Defy Extreme E Special Edition During The Island X Prix in Sardinia

The inaugural Island X Prix doubleheader takes place on the Italian island of Sardinia in July 2022, and it is part of the Extreme E electric rally racing series. A special version of the DEFY Extreme Carbon, the world's lightest and most durable 1/100th-of-a-second automatic high-frequency chronograph, was created by Zenith, the Official Timekeeper and Founding Partner of Extreme E, a Swiss luxury timepiece brand.

The DEFY Extreme E "Island X Prix" features back-to-back races, and the championship's bright orange is being repurposed as the event's official colour.

Carbon fibre, which is both very light and extremely robust, was used to make the crown and chronograph pushers of the DEFY Extreme E "Island X Prix" edition. The titanium pusher guards and the bezel's twelve facets are micro-blasted.

The dial of this timepiece is a multi-layered display of sapphire crystal in various shades of clear and orange. The fastest automated high-frequency chronograph calibre on the market measures time to within 1/100th of a second thanks to its two separate escapements that beat at 5Hz (36'000 VpH) for the timekeeping section and 50Hz (360'000 VpH) for the chronograph function. It may be seen in part through the dial and the rear of the case. Moreover, the movement is visible via a sapphire display back engraved with the Island X Prix logo.

The "Island X Prix" edition of the DEFY Extreme E has a rubber strap infused with recycled Continental CrossContact tyres from the first racing season. The orange accents on the dial of the Island X Prix watch are matched by the orange cordura-effect rubber inlay around the black rubber element of the Velcro strap. Two additional straps, one in black rubber and one in black Velcro, are included with the watch and can be switched out quickly and easily without any additional tools owing to a convenient mechanism on the case back.

Waterproof and crushproof, the DEFY Extreme E "Island X Prix" watch case is made with several components salvaged from the first season's racetracks. Both the lid coating and the plate covering are made from recycled materials: the former is Extreme E Season 1 racing tarpaulin, the latter is E-grip tyres.

The new chronograph, like the first version of the DEFY Extreme E "Desert X Prix," will be made in a limited edition of 20 pieces and sold only at ZENITH shops throughout the world.
