While the pandemic shook the entire world causing major changes across all industries, the automobile sector was no different and has dad to adapt to this change. Being a majorly German controlled industry, the Chinese market succumbed to a lot many other brands as part of the most sold cars in 2020 list.
Mercedes-Benz beat BMW to attain the world’s best-selling car brand in the luxury sector in 2020. It outsold its archrival and topped major auto ranks for the fifth year consecutively, while BMW observed a sharp fall by 7.3% to 2.03 million.
Tesla saw a huge growth in sales, along with Nio and Li Auto which gave tough competition to German based brands in China like Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW which have been reigning over the Chinese automobile market.
German luxury car brands gave away much of their share to electric upstarts.
They are trying to redeem themselves by offering an expansion across electrical offerings. For instance, Daimler is to launch its fully battery-powered vehicle in 2021.
On the other hand, BMW is all set to increase its electric production to almost double by introducing 25 plug-in hybrid models by the end of 2023.
While Mercedes over-powered BMW across overall car sales but lacked behind in electric and plug-ins, which BMW sold 193,000 of last year.
Whereas Audi delivered nearly 47,000 battery powered SUV’s.
Mercedes saw a huge rise in sales across the fourth quarter of last year observing nearly 160,000 deliveries, easily meeting Europe’s Co2 targets.
