Bugatti Chiron Profilée - The Most Expensive New Automobile Ever Auctioned
The Bugatti Chiron Profilée, a one-of-a-kind piece of Bugatti's history and the final W16-powered vehicle accessible from the Atelier, has been sold for a staggering net price of 9,792,500 Euros*. This sale at the RM Sotheby's auction on February 1 in Paris makes the Chiron Profilée the most expensive new automobile ever sold at auction.
With manufacturing of the Chiron1 models, the W16 Mistral2 and the Bolide3 fully sold out, the auction of the Chiron Profilée4 was the last chance to acquire a brand-new Bugatti with the iconic W16 engine from the Atelier in Molsheim, France. Bidding was intense both in the room and over the phone for such a significant piece of Bugatti's history.
Hendrik Malinowski, Managing Director of Bugatti Automobiles, stated, "With only one Chiron Profilée ever destined to exist, it was important for us to give as many people as possible the chance to acquire this piece of history, and we were thrilled by the enthusiasm of the global automotive community for this very special car. Bidders obviously understood the significance and worth of the Chiron Profilée, as shown by the heated competition and record-setting price.
With a winning bid of 9,792,500 Euros net, the new owner of the Chiron Profilée has added this automotive rarity to their collection. It is the very last Bugatti offered for sale from the Atelier in Molsheim with the iconic W16 powerplant.
Marcus Gorig, Car Specialist at RM Sotheby's, said,
"It was a pleasure for us to showcase this extremely exceptional lot with Bugatti. The sale of the Chiron Profilée was one of the most anticipated moments of the entire auction, with huge worldwide interest in the automobile, the Profilée garnered substantial attention at the auction among bidders and inquisitive observers who had came to take a sight of this remarkable car. With multiple bids in the room and on the phone, there was a palpable feeling that history was being created, and we congratulate the new owner of the Chiron Profilée on their extraordinary purchase."
The term ‘Profilée’ takes inspiration from one of Jean Bugatti’s early innovations - a special Type 46 variant known as Surprofilée, with a sleeker shape and an exquisite sweeping tail. The Chiron Profilée has now added its own chapter to Bugatti's 114-year-old pedigree, just as the Type 57SC remains an essential part of the company's past.
Like the Chiron Pur Sport⁵, the Chiron Profilée utilises the tremendous 1,500 PS development of the quad-turbo 8.0-liter but the automobile solitary is entirely distinct in its style and its nuances.
The sweeping fixed rear wing completely attached to the body of the vehicle both offers stability at high speed and critical cooling for the W16 engine. The Profilée is also the first Chiron offered equipped with a woven leather finish in the inside and its exterior colour dubbed Argent Atlantique is entirely unique and has never – and will never be – placed on any other Chiron model. The horseshoe-style wheels inspired by the Bugatti iconic horseshoe grille as well as created and built especially for this particular automobile and symbolise further characteristics which can only be seen on the Profilée.
