The Excalibur Liu Wei Monotourbillon is a Work of Art Brimming With Urban Life and Light

Roger Dubuis' genetic makeup compels them to seek inspiration in the most improbable locations. This entails cooperating with globally recognised urban culture artists who share its ideas in order to challenge the status quo, display radical competency, and obsess daily about the design of the future.

Roger Dubuis is thrilled to introduce the Excalibur Liu Wei Monotourbillon, the fourth timepiece from the Urban Culture Tribe, as it continues its aim to create groundbreaking masterpieces (MT).

Roger Dubuis, impressed by Liu Wei's unclassifiable aesthetic, granted the sculptor, illustrator, and painter access to the Manufacture, its most important space. The multitalented artist updated the astral signature of the famed Excalibur Mountain in this piece. Liu Wei, engrossed in the activity, imagines a piece of art composed of brilliant colours and architectural lines, a creative mirror of the dynamic and complicated urban life.

Inspired By Urban Evolution

Last year, Roger Dubuis, who never shies away from a challenge, chose to remodel and remake its own work of art, the Excalibur MT. Now, both the case and the movement have sleek, modern lines, and the signature star floats freely over the barrel. Reinterpreted for the modern world, its development enhanced the watch while providing Liu Wei with a vibrant and diverse canvas on which to express himself.

Born in China, where he now lives and works, Liu Wei makes anything from pointed cultural critiques to evocative art pieces. As with Roger Dubuis, his unique skill and ingenuity have brought him success, and his rule-breaking masterpieces have been shown in the most prominent institutions and exhibitions in the world. As a member of a generation that grew up amid a period of increasing urbanisation, his work, particularly the iconic "Purple Air" series, is profoundly impacted by this phenomena.

Roger Dubuis is as preoccupied as everyone else with constructing the future, and his work reflects the world's dynamic urban environment and digital progress. The artist creates an expressive painting that conveys a foggy, chaotic, and digitalized environment by using a complex arrangement of vivid lines. This concept is replicated by the watchmakers of Roger Dubuis, who transform the original Excalibur MT into a complicated artwork of clashing hues that pulses with the brilliance and vigour of the modern metropolitan environment.

Reflecting on the difficulty, the artist said,

"In my work, I never commit to a single method, and I admire other artists who do the same, whether they are watchmakers or writers. Art is about obtaining a new viewpoint on the world and experimenting with different techniques to produce it."

Exceptional Craftsmanship

To realise Liu Wei's concept, the watchmakers at Roger Dubuis invented an unusual three-layer approach. As the first layer of ornamentation, the front and rear of a transparent sapphire glass cut with vertical lines makes a remarkable effect. The watchmakers filled each groove by hand with colour, waiting for each line to dry before moving on to the next.

Some grooves are filled with traditional lacquer, while others are filled with UV paint, a method that requires extreme attention. This combination of painted and glowing lines creates delicate architectural depth under UV light and exhibits our understanding of luminescence. The selection of colours and their varying effects reflect the artist's notion of the world's luminosity and ever-changing topography.

The second layer has Roger Dubuis' astral signature. Consistently ready to break the restrictions, its thickness has been reduced to accommodate Liu Wei's design. In contrast to the vibrant composition created by the colourful stripes, the grey structure's distinct black lines are unsettling. This is an identical mirror to how the artist uses materials to disrupt methodical patterns in his own work.

The third and final layer is a sapphire glass caseback with horizontal grooves that has been laser-engraved. This UV-painted overlap of lines provides a dramatic contrast to the previous layer's vertical stripes. The result of an exclusive and labor-intensive procedure is an authentic piece of contemporary art.

The flange features the last touches of artistic craftsmanship. In place of putting minute marks to the dark grey surface, the Maison elected to enhance the hour markers with black SuperLuminova* for a stunning glow in the dark effect that is also visible under UV light. The emblems of Roger Dubuis and Swiss Made are filled for the first time with powdered SuperLuminova*.

This innovative design provides this portion of the watch three unique looks: silver by day, green at night, and blue under UV light.

The Science of Performance Enhancement

The RD512SQ calibre is among the finest examples of watchmakers' creative and mechanical expertise. By utilising titanium and cobalt chrome to reduce the weight of the tourbillon, the power reserve has been significantly boosted to 72 hours, enabling the watch to be left off over the weekend. Within the tourbillon, non-magnetic material is used to better serve the user and enrich their experience, indicating that no detail has been forgotten.

The clock is meticulously hand-finished and has the most demanding trademark of fine watchmaking. Roger Dubuis' inventiveness is visible in the antinomic decoration of the Poincon de Genève, such as its circularly brushed top surfaces and polished angles. The Poincon de Genève marks the height of brilliance and expertise.

The Excalibur Liu Wei MT is limited to just eight pieces and has a 42 mm titanium grade 5 casing and a Quick Release System-equipped replaceable black calf leather strap for optimal comfort and mobility.

Together with its friends, the Maison exemplifies what happens when standards are abandoned and creativity is unrestrained. Roger Dubuis has once again shown that the most fascinating way to experience Hyper HorologyTM is by uniting a multitalented artist with great watchmakers.

Roger Dubuis is not the owner of the SuperLuminova trademark.

About Roger Dubuis

The rush of adrenaline, the pounding of the heart, and the sense that something is imminent:

WELCOME TO HYPER HOROLOGY'S FUTURE

Roger Dubuis is obnoxious, overbearing, and somewhat insane. This is the essence of Roger Dubuis: an integrated Manufacture, an innovative mindset, and a brash disregard for convention! Laugh, shout, yell, and above all else, create for an elite tribe that adheres to the philosophy of living each moment to the fullest.

Roger Dubuis is without a doubt the most exciting way to experience Hyper Horology, since it is influenced by numerous cutting-edge industries and unique design.
