Together with John Howe, famed fantasy illustrator and conceptual designer on both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, Jaquet Droz spent three years developing an Art Watch specifically for the fantasy genre.
Like Jaquet Droz, John Howe is capable of bringing fantastical realms to life and evoking a range of felt experiences. The Swiss watchmaker wanted the dragon to come to life, while the artist drew it. The Dragon Automation watch is one of the most advanced automaton watches ever created, with a whopping nine separate animations. Because of the randomness of the animation sequence, it seems like it's always changing. The crest of the holy animal rises and falls, its spine sways like its tail, its eyes and mouth move, its tongue flicks back and forth, and its claws hold a stone that spins endlessly.
Jaquet Droz's new Vision 8.0 calls for the La Chaux-de-Fonds factory to focus only on custom orders from individuals with a strong sense of individuality.
Jaquet Droz is already exploring the possibility of incorporating other materials, such as sapphire, into the watch's 43 mm casing, which is finished in the gold of the owner's choosing. You have the option of engraving the casing or leaving it blank. In order to make the watch really unique, the solid dial may be engraved or swapped out for a medallion made of any stone. Dragon's scales, likewise made of gold and totally etched by hand, may be emphasised to varying degrees.
Jaquet Droz is finishing up the installation of a cutting-edge phygital solution at its headquarters. Because it is networked and transparent, customers will be able to watch as their very own Dragon Automatons being built.
