Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra is the World's Thinnest Mechanical Watch, measuring only 1.8mm in thickness.
The case of the premium timepiece is constructed of sandblasted titanium, while the rear is built of tungsten carbide.
Bulgari's Finissimo series has established a few milestones in the field of ultra-thin timepieces. Seven world records for ultra-thin watches were broken over an eight-year period beginning in 2014, when the brand introduced the world's thinnest tourbillon, minute repeater, self-winding watch, self-winding tourbillon, chronograph (which was also self-winding with a second time zone), tourbillon chronograph, and perpetual calendar. Bulgari is commemorating the tenth anniversary of its Octo Finissimo line with the creation of the world's thinnest mechanical watch.
The Octo Finissimo Ultra is just 1.8mm thick from front to back, 0.2mm thinner than the previous record holder, the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept.
Bulgari spent three years developing this extraordinary timepiece in partnership with movement designer and manufacturer Concepto in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Octo Finissimo Ultra is 40mm in diameter and includes a slim integrated bracelet with a "invisible" folding clasp.
The caseback of the watch doubles as the base plate for the mechanism. The manual-winding movement with 170 components was integrated into the caseback of the sandblasted titanium case. The caseback is made of tungsten carbide to prevent the watch from bending while being worn. The crystal is bonded to the bezel at an ultra-thin thickness of 0.30mm. It rests on two silicone pads secured to screws (visible on the barrel's perimeter at about 3 and 6 o'clock) to maintain all functionality.
Additionally, the Octo Finissimo Ultra has a 50-hour power reserve thanks to its huge mainspring barrel. Bulgari has replaced the usual crown with two thumbwheels, one for winding and one for changing the time.
This watch has been the subject of eight patent applications. They concern the watch glass assembly, the barrel structure, the oscillator module, the differential display, the modular structure, the bracelet, the bimetal case's middle-mainplate/caseback, and the Bvlgari Singularity technology.
The QR code etched on the barrel ratchet wheel of the first ten Octo Finissimo Ultra watches links to one-of-a-kind NFT artworks that also serve as an authentication for the watches.
The Octo Finissimo Ultra has a suggested retail price of €400,000. (approximately USD 440,000) and if you desire one, you'll have to move quickly, since Bulgari's limited edition collection is restricted to only ten pieces.
The Octo Finissimo Ultra surpassed the previous record-holder, the 0.078-inch-thick Altiplano Ultimate Concept Watch.
'At a minuscule 2mm in thickness, the Altiplano Ultimate Concept served as a showcase for numerous Piaget innovations, including a case that was integrated into the movement, an integrated winding crown, an ultra-thin crystal, and, most significantly, new barrel and energy regulation constructions,' Piaget said of the previous record-holder.
