The magnificent brand story of Land Rover

Unscalable Heights- Land Rover

If I would ask you what equipment you would need to scale a mountain, you will probably say, ropes, safety jacket, helmet, nails, mountaineering shoes et cetera. But, if you had to scale the mountain on plush opulent leather, seated with your friends and looking insanely posh, all the equipment you need is a Land Rover.

The Land Rover was the first off-road capable vehicle which caused a huge revolution in the world of automobiles. Rover Company is the parent company of Land Rover. Land Rovers were known as the “series” cars or vehicles, first of which was the HUE 116 which was made in 1949. They were off road vehicles made by the Rover Company. The Rover Company was eventually absorbed by British Leyland in 1967. In the 1970s commercial vehicle models of the Land Rover started rolling out in production lines.

The original and first Land Rover ever made was the Range Rover, which was coined as the “Car for All Reasons.” It bragged about a top speed of 100 mph, 4-wheel drive capable of intense off-roading and space for 5 occupants. An all in one car of such sorts was unknown in the automobile world. It was the perfect car. A normal man could drive it to office in the morning, take it to the track in the afternoon, and then go for a wild-life safari the very same evening, in the same car. All of this, with his whole family in the back. It was truly an extraordinary sight.

After the “invention” of Range Rover, Land Rover became a separate subsidiary under British Leyland. The design of Range Rover made it look like a hefty bodybuilder. Its huge exterior was made from lightweight aluminium. Rovers only had three doors (the boot flap is counted as a door) until 1981 when the five door Rover was introduced. It was not like Rover already was really heavy and needed two more large heavy doors for the awkward seating at the back.

The Land Rovers were made keeping the US market in mind but proved to be expensive and not exactly fit for the safety regulations in place. I am not going to bore you with the details of how Land Rover ultimately made a strong hold within the US but I will tell you that Land Rover won Playboy’s “Best 4x4” award in 1988. In the 1990s, the “Defender” was introduced. It was succeeded by the “Discovery” which is still sold as it was given many cosmetic and internal improvements over the years. It is still one of Land Rover’s most sold cars. The Defender came with a 8 person comfortable and 12 person packed seating due the change from 3 to 5 doors.

Land Rover has been owned by a lot of major car companies over the years. As I mentioned, it was first British Leyland, then in it was BMW, then Ford, then it became Jaguar Land Rover, which is currently owned by the Tata Motors from India. Under the ownership of so many car companies gave Land Rover a whole new perspective which made them expand their territory over the world.

Rovers were used immensely for cross country and cross continent races and rallies which proved that the engine, bodywork, and interior in these was highly dependable. Rovers have been a staple road trip car due to the comfort a person can experience in these cars. Reliability was a huge factor that Land Rover considered.

By 2019, the Range Rover Evoque was the most sold car with 80,000 models sold, with Range Rover sport with about the same number of models sold.

The most luxurious vehicle offered by Land Rover is their SVAutobiography with a price tag of $200,000. More than an average sports car, probably faster than one and can definitely fit more people.

The Rover is truly an exceptional machine even though it has been through so many hurdles during it’s journey. Jaguar Land Rover has come out with some models which you would see in every street of every country. Due to it’s quality leather and wood interior, aluminium chassis and V6/V8 engine, Land Rovers are proper luxury vehicles. They are a statement of exclusivity. You would definitely see one in the garage of a powerful person since this car resonates with that feeling.
