Pebble Beach, California, on the 19th of August in 2022: Aston Martin has unveiled the new V12 Vantage Roadster, a limited-edition vehicle that blends the exhilarating performance of the most powerful Aston Martin Vantage ever created with the freedom and sensory stimulation of driving with the top down.
The V12 Vantage Roadster is tightly restricted to 249 customer examples worldwide, with all examples sold before to release. It features a stunning widebody design, ground-hugging wide-track suspension, and – for the first time in a Vantage Roadster – the enormous 5.2-liter Twin-Turbo V12 engine. The V12 Vantage Roadster brings the open-air driving experience to a new level of excitement with its blistering straight-line speed and the unrestrained roar of Aston Martin's 700PS 12-cylinder engine.
Roberto Fedeli, Aston Martin's Chief Technical Officer, said, "We have worked tirelessly to guarantee that the V12 Vantage Roadster offers the same power and dynamism as the V12 Vantage, while exceeding it in terms of the sheer sensory thrill that can only be experienced with the top down. With more power and torque than any previous Vantage Roadster, a wide-track chassis with finely adjusted suspension calibration, and up to ten times the downforce of the series production Vantage Roadster, this is a magnificent vehicle designed for our most ardent clients."
This exciting driving experience is dependent on the engine's power. The quad-cam 60-degree 5.2-liter V12 with 700 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 753 Newton-meters of torque at 5500 rpm is a veritable force of nature. With a power-to-weight ratio of 372PS-per-ton and an endlessly astonishing delivery that blends seamless in-gear responsiveness with epic acceleration, each blip of the V12 Vantage Roadster's throttle produces an unforgettable surge of excitement.
The V12 Vantage Roadster's acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and peak speed of 200 mph place it at the pinnacle of open-air sportscar performance. With a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and mechanical Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) positioned in the rear, the vehicle has the purity and balance of a front-mid-engine rear-wheel drive configuration. Optimised transmission calibration minimises shift speeds and maximises driver contact, while adaptive software in the gearbox's control system monitors operating circumstances and driving requirements to improve the driver's perception of responsiveness and control.
Sharing the same suspension technology as the V12 Vantage, but with a custom tune for its adaptive dampers, the V12 Vantage Roadster has the sharpest possible characteristics. The steering calibration is identical to that of the V12 Vantage in order to provide optimum steering feel and swift reaction; these enhancements bring the vehicle to life in bends and can be felt with each steering input.
The V12 Vantage Roadster, like the V12 Vantage, comes equipped with Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCB). The front discs are 410mm x 38mm and are linked with 6-piston callipers, while the rear discs measure 360mm x 32mm and are mated with 4-piston callipers. In addition to significantly enhanced stopping power and resistance to brake fade at high temperatures, the CCB technology reduces unsprung weight by 23 kg compared to steel brakes, improving steering responsiveness and ride comfort.
The front bumper, clamshell bonnet, front fenders, and side sills of the V12 Vantage Roadster are fashioned from carbon fibre, while the rear bumper and deck lid are made from lightweight composite material. With the use of a lightweight battery and a distinctive centre-mounted twin-exit exhaust system manufactured from lightweight 1mm stainless steel, further savings have been realised. This new system weighs 7.2kg lighter than the Vantage Roadster's exhaust and was designed to give the V12 Vantage Roadster a sound to match its appearance.
It is indicative of the V12 Vantage Roadster's enormous performance that its striking appearance is dictated by its performance. For instance, the strong physicality of the widebody design is required to handle the wider-than-Vantage 40mm widetrack suspension. The revised front bumper design, complete with a full width front splitter, creates greater downforce and aerodynamic balance, while the reshaped, 25% bigger front grille and the 'horseshoe' engine vent provide enhanced cooling.
Aerodynamic performance also influences the new sculpted single-piece sills and rear bumper, which has an integrated diffuser – the efficacy of which has been enhanced by the routing of the centre-mounted, twin-tailpipe exhaust system. Unlike the V12 Vantage, the V12 Vantage Roadster does not have the dramatic rear wing as standard equipment, however it may be ordered as an option. Those who choose for a more subdued appearance may rest assured that the aerodynamic balance is maintained due to the careful handling of underbody airflow.
Impressive 21-inch alloy wheels are available in two finishes, satin black or satin black diamond turned, as the finishing touch. A lightweight forged wheel option is also available in satin black and satin black diamond turned, which reduces unsprung mass by an additional 8kg. All wheels are equipped with 275/35 R21 front and 315/30 R21 rear Michelin Pilot 4S high performance tyres.
As the pinnacle of the Vantage lineup, the V12 Roadster comes standard with Sports Plus Seats upholstered in full semi-aniline leather with 'Wings' quilting and perforation pattern. Optionally available is a carbon fibre performance seat with exposed twill carbon fibre shell and manual 6-way adjustment for customers seeking the utmost in dynamic design and maximum support for high performance driving, while saving 7.3kg without sacrificing occupant comfort.
Customers of the V12 Vantage Roadster may increase the uniqueness of their vehicle by using Q by Aston Martin, the brand's customised personalization option, for anything from spectacular external graphics and liveries to woven leather. With significant use of exposed carbon fibre in its design, the V12 Vantage Roadster also lends itself nicely to Q by Aston Martin: Commission's line of tinted lacquers, which change appearance under varying lighting situations to highlight the hand-laid carbon fibre panels.
Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin, Marek Reichman, explains: "V12 Vantage Roadster is a blend of living sculpture and physiology, similar to the functions of an elite runner or thoroughbred racehorse, from a design standpoint. On the one hand, V12 Vantage Roadster was intended to optimise the advantages of airflow into, into, and around the vehicle, similar to how its components are engineered to withstand the demands of optimum performance and taught to work together to boost efficiency and power utilising oxygen. And on the other hand, for our Drivers, we designed this explicit open-top sports vehicle for thrill-seekers. The platform afforded us the chance to build a modern visual declaration of purpose. The outcome is a live, breathing, moving sculpture with control at the fingers ".
The V12 Vantage Roadster is slated to enter production in the third quarter of 2022, with first deliveries commencing in the fourth quarter.
The new V12 Vantage Roadster combines supreme performance and open-air excitement.
