Collectors Choice Auction by AstaGuru - Rare Works by Leading Indian Modernists

The most recent edition of the 'Collectors Choice' Modern Indian Art auction by AstaGuru will provide buyers with a unique chance to purchase masterpieces and rare compositions from various eras of Modern Indian Art.

The opening bid for all of the artworks will be 20,000 INR.

The anticipated dates for the auction are March 29-30, 2023.

Commenting on the auction, Sunny Chandiramani, Vice President- Client Relations at AstaGuru, said,

"AstaGuru's 'Collectors Choice' section has become one of the most anticipated auctions in our yearly calendar, with each sale generating an incredible reaction from collectors. By exhibiting works at various price ranges, the format has enabled us to convey a larger view of Indian modernism. The auction includes sculptures by prominent artists such as Himmat Shah, Prodosh Das Gupta, and P V Janakiram, among others, that span the spectrum of Indian modernism across a variety of media.

The auction will include many paintings by contemporary master M.F. Husain. M. F. Husain, credited with bringing contemporary Indian art to the international stage, produced hundreds of pieces that remained rooted in his heritage.

M.F. Husain: The auction exhibits the multidimensional brilliance of M.F. Husain with five pieces in several media. Lot 183 is an unnamed still-life painting. It was created in 1993 using acrylic on canvas and is estimated to fetch between INR 60,000,000 and INR 80,000,000. Lot no 30. This unnamed woodcut was also on display in Husain Ki Sarai in Faridabad, Haryana. It was created in 1992 using acrylic on wood and is projected to fetch between INR 20,000,000 and INR 25,000,000.

M. V. Dhurandhar: Lots 22 and 23 provide an exceptional chance to buy an unique collection of works by India's esteemed ancient master M.V. Dhurandhar. Each lot consists of five watercolour paintings that depict the splendour and beauty of the Indian countryside. Each of these lots will be auctioned at a price between 5,000,000 and 6,000,000 INR.

J Swaminathan: For the first time at auction, lot no. 196 is an unnamed oil painting in the artist's characteristic style by J Swaminathan. The oil on canvas work will be marketed with an estimated price range of INR 40,000 to 60,000.

Krishen Khanna: Lot no. 118 is the work of veteran artist Krishen Khanna, a member of the renowned Mumbai-based Progressive Artists' Group created in 1947. "Battle in Forest," a seven-foot-tall monochrome painting, is being offered at auction for the first time. It was rendered using paint and charcoal on canvas and represents a battle between these two regal creatures, an elephant and a tiger. Using smearing and erasing methods, the artist demonstrates his mastery with charcoal in this captivating monochrome work. It will be marketed with an estimated price range of INR 400,000 to 500,000. The auction will include an additional five pieces by the artist.

Manjit Bawa: The auction will also include a number of noteworthy charcoal pieces.

Lot 83, an unnamed work by Manjit Bawa, was created in 2000 and has been included in various notable exhibits and publications, including the 2011 Vadehra art gallery exhibition Let's Paint the Sky Red: Manjit Bawa. This work is estimated to cost between INR 35,00,000 and INR 45,00,000.

Amrita Sher-Gil: Lot no. 14 is a double-sided work by one of the most influential personalities in Modern Indian art, Amrita Sher-Gil. This piece, a national treasure, will be sold for an estimated INR 15,000 to 20,000.

F. N. Souza: The auction will include many works by the artist F.N. Souza. 1984 acrylic on canvas still life titled 'Still Life With Skull', lot number 90. It is estimated to be worth between 20,000 and 30,000 INR. Lot 166, a unique still life by the artist, is estimated to fetch between INR 20,000,000 and INR 25,000,000. 1974 saw the use of acrylic on canvas board. Picasso Souza was the title of an exhibition held at the Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi, with the accompanying book of the same name. Lot 169 is another captivating painting characterised by a brilliant crimson colour. The 1994 acrylic on paper work is estimated to be worth between 5,000,000 and 7,000,000 INR. Lot number. 190 is a 1986 acrylic on canvas artwork by Souza. It is anticipated to cost between 20,000 and 25,000 INR.

Anjolie Ela Menon: Lot 151 is a nudist piece by senior artist Anjolie Ela Menon. The 1980 oil on canvas work will be auctioned with an estimated price range of INR 30,000,000 to INR 40,000,000.

S.H. Raza: A distinctive style The lot number 91 Bindu work named 'Holi' by artist S.H. Raza is also a significant item in the collection. 2014 was the first year the painting was offered at auction. It was made using acrylic on canvas. It is estimated to be worth between 20,000 and 30,000 INR.
