Top Ecofriendly Indian brands and why you should buy from them

“We can sit back, do nothing and watch our planet be destroyed. Or we can take action, become advocates and start making lifestyle choices that are kinder to people and the planet”– Kira Simpson

With environmental issues like climate change, pollution and deforestation rapidly impacting our earth, there has never been a more important time to educate ourselves and become further collectively aware of how we- as consumers, businesses and individuals leave an impact on our environment. It must be every human beings responsibility to understand the need of the hour and oblige to being well-informed and thoughtful in the way that they choose to treat their environment. More often than not, we forget how impactful our actions can be, especially when it leads to destructing our planet. From using excessive plastic to chemicals and agricultural waste, it builds up over time and causes drastic changes to our ecosystem.

Which is why, it is important now more than ever, to make informed choices and understand how we can replenish and save our environment, by consciously taking small steps in the right direction and replacing old practices with sustainable alternatives.

Let’s begin with understanding, what is Eco-friendly?

In simple terms, any commodity that is not harmful to the environment through its materials, production and consumption, is known to be eco-friendly.  So a brand that claims to be eco-friendly basically ensures that at no point in their product cycle are they using or practicing anything that could be destructive or potently harmful to the environment. This means choosing everything from materials, to packaging to promotion has to be either recyclable, renewable or bio-degradable and in no way destructive to the environment. For example, in order to produce one cotton t-shirt, it requires 10,000 litres of fresh water. Depleting such a large amount of water on a single piece of clothing is extremely harmful for our environment, which is why a better alternative to using cotton is to replace it with non-hazardous materials such as hemp, flax, bamboo or allied fibres.

Eco-friendly and Businesses

It is important to understand the reason as to how businesses integrate with the environment along with the importance of maintaining strategies and practices that are safe but benefit the service you are providing. More and more businesses today have started inculcating sustainable policies in order to fulfil socio-economic responsibilities and simultaneously grow a consumer conscious entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Over the last decade, we have seen a drastic change in the way Indian businesses approach the entrepreneurial market and it truly marks the beginning of ethical partnerships and consumerism. What sets each brand apart in terms of renewability is that, every brand offers to be a part of this shift differently, depending on the service they provide. Some brands claim to be animal friendly, eco-friendly or sustainable, while others believe in giving back to the community, working with environmental organisations and so on. While most of these brands may be modest in scale, they are big in their vision of changing society and setting a positive example on the importance of renewability and its impact on our environment.

In the last five years, India has seen a major shift in the way ethical brands are portrayed and also in how consumers perceive them. These brands are marketed through commercial and social media platforms that has led them to connect with a whole new range of diverse audiences.

Here’s a list of the most renowned Eco-friendly brands in India and why they stand out from the rest:

They specialise in putting a spin on traditional wear by incorporating modern designs and bringing the two in unison.

“All their products are hand-made and woven by local artisans from Banaras, ensuring empowerment of over 8000 artisans and weavers from across the country. They also only use 100% fair trade certified cotton in order to reduce any harmful impact on the environment.”
