Vakkaru Reserve Maldives Bags Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence Thrice Now

12 July 2023 - Baa Atoll, Republic of the Maldives

Vakkaru Maldives is ecstatic to announce that its wine cellar, Vakkaru Reserve, has received the esteemed Wine Spectator magazine's Best of Award of Excellence for 2023.

This is the third time that the island sanctuary's vault has received this prestigious award, further enhancing its standing as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts.

The Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards are intended to acknowledge establishments whose wine lists offer intriguing selections that complement their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine enthusiasts.

This "Two-Glass" designation is awarded to establishments with at least 350 wine labels, representing a wide variety of wine regions, genres, and vintage depth.

Vakkaru Reserve's diverse and refined collection and unwavering dedication to delivering exquisite visitor experiences were instrumental in earning this recognition. Among the 1,411 award-winning establishments in 2023, only four were located in the Maldives. The Vakkaru Reserve wine vault, which opened in 2018, is housed in an exquisite wooden structure just steps from the ocean and can accommodate up to 10 guests for an intimate dining experience around a communal table.

The eight-seat outdoor dining table, surrounded by palm trees and gorgeously illuminated by candlelight, is a popular location for guests seeking a special evening and those interested in sampling the cellar's cigar collection. In addition to wine sampling experiences, guests can enjoy three- to five-course set menus paired with wines selected by the sommelier at private wine pairing dinners.

The wine list includes 680 labels from 15 different nations, all of which are comprised of vintage and non-vintage wines from the Old and New Worlds. It includes rare vintages such as the 1974 and 1985 Chateau Cheval Blanc, the 2002 Louis Roederer Cristal Brut, the 2002 Krug Clos du Mesnil, and the 2009 Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé, the 1990 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, the 2002 Chateau d'Yquem, and the 2006-2014 Tiganello.

"We are ecstatic to receive the Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence for the third consecutive year. This award is not only a testament to Vakkaru Reserve's diversified and refined wine collection, but also to our team's unwavering dedication to delivering unmatched guest experiences. Vakkaru Reserve is more than a wine vault; it is a destination for wine connoisseurs and aficionados in search of an exquisite wine journey. As we commemorate this award, we are inspired to continue curating world-class wine lists and exceptional experiences that our guests have come to expect and appreciate,''
said Iain McCormack, General Manager of Vakkaru Maldives.
