Maldivian Resort Continues Leading Sustainable Tourism Practices with Impressive Environmental Achievements

VARU by Atmosphere, nestled on the north-west edge of Malé Atoll in the Maldives, has once again been recognized with the prestigious Green Globe Recertification. This accolade underscores the resort's continuous commitment to sustainable operations, achieving an impressive 86% compliance with stringent global standards for environmentally conscious hospitality.

Mei P Pun, the General Manager of VARU by Atmosphere, expressed their dedication to sustainability, which is deeply ingrained in their operational philosophy, dubbed 'Joy of Giving.'

"We are committed to making genuine, impactful changes and our aim is to deliver delightful experiences to our guests while showing the utmost respect for our local environment and community."

He highlighted ongoing efforts like the coral garden project which is set to launch this year as part of their biodiversity conservation initiative.

VARU by Atmosphere is operated by Atmosphere Core, which drives the CORE IMPACT strategy focusing on Community, Operations, Resources, and Environment. Mei emphasized the integration of sustainability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) into their management plans.

"Our goal is not only to set targets but to make our sustainability initiatives educational, enjoyable, and purposeful for both guests and team members,"

he remarked, hoping to set new standards for tomorrow.

The resort's community engagement initiatives reflect a sincere desire to contribute meaningfully to societal welfare. Recent activities include organizing a special Iftar for 90 children in collaboration with Fivathi Orphanage and promoting hospitality career opportunities to Maldivian youth on K. Huraa Island, enhancing community integration and economic empowerment.

VARU by Atmosphere adopts numerous eco-friendly measures to minimize its environmental footprint. These include using 99% energy-efficient LED lighting, installing solar energy systems, implementing a paperless check-in process, and operating an in-house water bottling plant to significantly reduce plastic waste. Moreover, the resort has a rigorous waste management program that includes recycling in partnership with leading Maldivian recycling firms.

Water conservation is also a priority; the resort features a wastewater treatment facility that recycles grey water for irrigation. Guests are encouraged to participate in the Towel and Linen Reuse Program to further reduce water consumption.

By prioritizing local sourcing and actively participating in reef and island cleanup activities, VARU by Atmosphere is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the Maldives for future generations.
