Monaco - Finally, Wally's brand-new wallywind collection's intriguing photos and first specifications are revealed. The three sailing boat types, ranging from 110ft to 150ft in LOA, are intended to revolutionise the options for owners interested in blazing speed and long-range cruising comfort.
The first unit of the wallywind110 will be released in May 2024, and construction has already started. She will feature a complete carbon hull, using the world-class craftsmanship of Wally's experienced laminators, who have always been at the forefront of exploiting this advanced technology. Moreover, she is equipped with Wally's streamlined sail handling technology, which has been embraced by the whole industry.
The project combines Wally expertise with naval design by judel/vrolijk & co, the firm responsible for some of the quickest sloops on the ocean today. The result of this partnership is a boat with the distinctive simplicity and grace of Wally's shapes, as well as captivating speed and stability.
According to Wally Managing Director Stefano de Vivo, the wallywind110 is the equivalent of a Grand Touring automobile. "It is a highly powerful, but smooth, long-distance cruising machine that, if so motivated, might become a real contender in a race. The yacht is suitable for an experienced sailor, maybe someone who has previously owned boats in the 60-80-foot range and is now ready to make the move to the 100-foot range for the added amenities.
Founder and Chief Designer Luca Bassani affirms, "The 110 is a real hybrid since it combines the proportions and luxuries of a deckhouse yacht with the spirit and performance of a racing vessel. The raised bulwarks conceal the fact that this boat has an elevated salon and an engine room below the floor. This implies that the layout's benefits are preserved without sacrificing attractiveness."
The boat is a reaffirmation of Wally's basic principles and is an extraordinarily competent bluewater cruising vessel capable of competing at the highest level of athletic endeavour. This boat can travel any ocean with up to four couples in the highest luxury, amuse for days at anchor, and excite both spectators and sailors in a race.
Wally holds technology near to his heart whenever it may enhance the sailing experience. In addition to the complete carbon lay-up, there is a high-performance carbon rig and three keel options: a fixed 4.5m keel, a 3.95-6.10 m telescoping keel, and a high-tech 4.50-6.80 m lifting keel. Not for nothing does this vessel boast an amazing ballast-to-weight ratio of 40%.
Other technological characteristics include the utilisation of lithium-ion batteries and lightweight auxiliary equipment, several high-pressure hydraulic pumps for optimal redundancy, and a low-profile twin rudder configuration. Wally's underwater anchoring system and the renowned Magic Trim hydraulic system for the main and jib sheets are standard on the wallywind110.
Space for customization
With its clean lines, this vessel provides a plenty of social space. There is no coaming in the 80sqm cockpit, which is on a single level and occupies the whole beam of the vessel. This alone is twice as large as the cockpits of other boats of comparable length. Seating and dining space for up to 15 guests is totally customizable. Fixed are just the two carbon wheels and the crew companionway.
Recalling the period of large yacht racing, the detachable deck furniture is one of the most attractive design characteristics. To prepare the wallywind110 for racing, each seat, sunbed, lounger, and table can be removed and stowed onshore. The design is unmistakably Wally, even down to the renowned "terrace on the sea" - a covered, deep aft deck.
In addition, there is a massive tender room buried under this deck that can accommodate a boat up to 4 metres in length. This keeps the transom accessible to swimmers, since a hydraulic bathing ladder may retract entirely into the hull.
The narrative continues underneath. With the engine room nestled under the saloon, the scene is set for a vast open-plan environment that blends eating, lounging, and working in luxury. A single skylight spans the whole length of the low-profile coachroof, while hatches and hull windows provide a sun-drenched living space.
The opulent owner's cabin may be configured in a variety of ways, including walk-in closets, separate his and hers bathrooms, and comfortable seats. There are up to three more guest rooms, two additional staff cabins, and one additional Captain's cabin. Wally proposes a whitewashed, carbon-detailed interior with a sporty, whitewashed wood exterior.
The 130 and 150 are the two largest boats in Wallywind's lineup. The first of these yachts is ideal for a sailor who has expertise with vessels approximately 100 feet in length but desires a little more room. It features a deckhouse with an elevated saloon that bridges the gap between interior and outside.
And the flagship of the Wallywind line, at 150 feet in length, breaks completely new ground for sailing superyachts. No other manufacturer in the world has produced a yacht of this size entirely from carbon fibre, which will give the 150 a distinct edge in light winds. Due to its very small displacement, the wallywind150 can raise its sails in wind speeds as low as 6-7 knots, when most vessels need winds of 12 knots or more to do so.
Stefano de Vivo explains, "The 130 and 150 are designed for owners who want to enjoy extended voyages in every sea in the globe aboard a vessel that delivers not only luxury and a high level of service, but also great performance." Therefore, they are enthusiastic about sailing and the ocean. The boats will also appeal to young individuals who want performance and have a genuine affinity with Wally's brand values.
