What Now? Unique Online Auction by Phillips

What Now? by Phillips:

This unique online Auction from February 2nd through the 9th, 2023 includes a selection of original artworks and editions by well-known contemporary artists.

Taking advantage of contemporary collecting trends, the online auction by Phillips will offer magnificent pieces by Ayako Rokkaku, Chiharu Shiota, Joan Cornella, Etsu Egami, Edgar Plans, Cristina BanBan, Javier Calleja, and Jade Kim, among others.

Presented in the auction, Untitled AR19-033 exemplifies Ayako Rokkaku's cartoon-like painting approach with her characteristic rainbow hues. Rokkaku captures the speed and vigour with which she paints by smearing brilliant swirls of colour directly with her bare hands and fingers as she dances over big canvases. Rokkaku's painterly textures recall parts of impressionism with their thick layers of impasto, which evoke the carefree mark-making of children's artwork.

South Korean visual artist Jade Kim works in the mediums of painting and sculpture. After over a decade in the disciplines of exhibition curating and product design, Kim opted to follow his passion and become an artist. In the current lot, Flower Aura, Kim's characteristic figure 'Min' is shown, which was inspired by his affection for his wife. With large, childlike eyes and a childlike demeanour, Min is sometimes shown against a captivating, otherworldly backdrop of nature or a starry night sky, seeming melancholy and ominous at times, and calm and ethereal at others.

The What Now? Online Auction also features a remarkable assortment of works by some of Spain's most sought-after artists, including Cristina BanBan, Javiver Calleja, Joan Cornella, and Edgar Plans. As represented in the current piece, Untitled, the exaggerated forms that occupy Cristina BanBan's portraiture are strongly centred on the feminine form.

Her characters, rendered in flesh tones, occupy her canvases with a fluidity that shapes their bodies without limitation. With his lovely, wide-eyed figures, Javier Calleja captures the hearts and souls of millions of people throughout the world. Round, pink cheeks and saccharine-sweet gazes dominate the acclaimed artist's body of work, a testament to childlike delight that invokes longing for simpler times.

Bidding starts on 2 February at 9:00 PM HKT and will end on 9 February at 6:00 PM HKT.
