The coronavirus pandemic has been the most significant worldwide engine of change in the average person's lifetime, already influencing consumer attitudes. The world has changed at a breakneck rate. Trends predicted for the next decade have accelerated to become ingrained in our daily lives within weeks. From above-the-keyboard styling to home hub functionality, we're rapidly adopting new ways of living and working. The pandemic had a significant influence on fashion trends, and we observed its pervasive impact on our lifestyle choices as well.
Due to the omnipresence of the mask, we witnessed an increased demand for fuss-free jewellery, particularly around the face and, more specifically, the earrings. As a result, long flowing danglers and chandeliers gave way to the "Button-up" fashion, providing the evergreen ear studs a boost in popularity. Consumers worldwide embraced this trend, and we saw studs in a variety of shapes and sizes, the larger the better! The button-up style is expected to continue to develop in strength this year, while the glamorous Hoops - large or little, plain or unconventional - will also make an appearance.
With 24/7 video calls, conferences and webinars becoming the new reality, we see an amplified need for making ‘above the keyboard dressing’ impactful. We call this trend ‘zoom-groomed’ where we popularized Jewelry categories like brooches and high-collar necklaces that help adorn above the waist look. One style in particular out-sparkled the rest – the collar necklaces. We made these a must have accessory to add zing to those never-ending WFH meetings.
Faith is experiencing a renaissance as a result of the pandemic. Uncertainty and disruption have taken an emotional toll on those seeking solace and calm through spirituality. Millions of people now have a reason to gaze within and upward in new spiritual ways as a result of the pandemic. In response to customer need for assurance and wellbeing, Jewellery will place a premium on mysticism and spirituality. Talisman themes such as religious symbols, the evil eye, and zodiac signs provide optimism, strength, and a sense of inner serenity. Designers are delving into the long-held popular advantages of gemstones to develop amulets that utilise these "healing" stones to help the wearer. The belief that they are "silent protectors" provides comfort and positive energy as they navigate through the darkness.
However, as we enter 2022 and life becomes a bit 'normal' again, we will experience an increased sense of liberation and joy. We would witness a resurgence of designs that promote optimism in response to post-pandemic worries. Colors have been shown to have a remarkable influence on human mood, elevating, stimulating, and inspiring. Jewelry in 2022 will be everything but dull and understated. A stronger emphasis on whimsical and mood-enhancing jewels would gain traction. Thus, a 'riot of colours' would be expressed through unusual combinations and vibrant juxtapositions of gemstones, providing designers with an extremely rich canvas on which to paint.
Hopefully, 2022 will restore some semblance of normalcy to our lives. With the most of last year spent at home, few people updated their wardrobes, but as we gradually recapture our old habits, we will also need to prepare for this new beginning. While 2021 was all about prudent spending and investment, 2022 would witness the reintroduction of jewellery as an ornament, as individuals embraced socialising with zeal. For the foreseeable future, minimalism is likely to go extinct from our dictionaries, and we will see the growth of highly flamboyant and dramatic jewellery designs, almost as worn art.
In terms of material, the modest pearl has endured the test of time and is making a comeback this season! Apart from the classic cream pearls, we'd see designers dabble with a new age colour palette comprised of rosaline pinks, glamorous blacks, and delicate greys. One item of jewellery that might benefit from the addition of pearls is the sautoir neckpiece, which can be interpreted as a single layered string, a multi-layered string, or a lot of pearls cascading into a tassel.
The current socioeconomic environment and consumer attitudes will continue to affect lifestyle trends. Vocal-for-local and Atmanirbhar Bharat are two powerful movements that are experiencing an increase in support for indigenous crafts from both businesses and consumers. Confined to their immediate family and friends, individuals have felt a great urge to maintain a connection to their roots and history. They seek solace in the nostalgic riches of the comforting past - in quest of what the past has that the present lacks. As a result, there would be a greater appreciation for magnificent traditional jewellery items produced using elaborate handcrafted processes, something that helps one reconnect with one's heritage. We'd see designers delving into our illustrious cultural history in search of inspiration on the verge of our legacy. More and more designers are collaborating with expert artisans to unearth the novel in the familiar, recreating heritage objects in more wearable and relevant avatars that are magnificent yet functional.
Following covid, there is a strong desire to reconnect with nature. Humanity has recognised the critical nature of restoring the planet's balance. There is a newfound emphasis on sustainability. From gravity-shaped designs to trees grown straight into furniture and mushrooms moulded into packaging, nature-inspired items will be created in conjunction with humans. The jewellery business is inextricably related to nature's bounty — metals, diamonds, and gemstones – as well as to its indiscriminate mining. Jewellery brands and designers are increasingly emphasising a new narrative of sustainable processes and materials. Green Gold would be more openly embraced by brands and customers alike. Additionally, there would be an organic trend toward "slow fashion." Modular jewellery that is adaptable and performs numerous roles will become the new value drivers.
