OWNER FAMILY: The first store was opened in Madrid in 1885 by Saturio Esteban after he completed his lapidary studies. Saturio's son Jose learned the skills from his father but left for Paris for his studies. He later returned and continued his family business. Jose didn't have any children of his own so he passed on the practice to his nephews. In the 1970s, Saturio's great-grandsons Juan José Carrera and Manuel Carrera created and established the brand Carrera Y Carrera. Manuel's goal was quite clear - to make the jeweler a global brand. By 1977, Manuel started taking the brand's jewelry designs to Baselworld bringing international recognition to the brand. Between 2002-06, Lladro took over the controls of the company.
