The brand was founded by two French designers, Marithé and François Girbaud, as ÇA, a brand which exclusively designed denims. The name of the company was changed due to copyright issues, and in 1978 that case was 'closed', and the heads of the company took the inspiration and renamed the brand as Closed. The brand designed several innovative designs in denim and it was later sold to Hamburg based business partners. The stone wash technique which was adopted by several denim manufacturers to create high quality denims, was initiated by Closed.
