This was founded by American fashion designer Ralph Lauren in 1967.

Ralph Lauren started The Ralph Lauren Corporation in the year 1967 with the production of men's ties. At the age of 28 years, Lauren worked for the tie manufacturer named Beau Brummell where he generated his interest in this business and persuaded the company's president to let him start his own line. He had much interest in sports so drawing from that interest, Lauren named his first full line of menswear as "Polo" in the year 1968. He indeed worked hard to make it possible and to make the brand one of the trusted and loved one. He worked out of a single "drawer" from a showroom in the Empire State Building and made deliveries to stores himself.

By the year 1969, the hard work started paying off and the Manhattan department store named Bloomingdale's sold Lauren's men line exclusively from the store. It was the very first time that Bloomingdale's had given any designer his own in-store shop. Later in the year 1971, Ralph Lauren Corporation tried to do something for women and launched a line of tailored shirts for women, which introduced the Polo player emblem, appearing on the shirt cuff. It was the brand's first full women's collection that was launched the following year. The year 1972 marked the opening of Ralph Lauren's store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills situated in California. It was his first freestanding store. In the year 1972, Lauren launched a short-sleeve cotton shirt in 24 vibrant colors which was then loved by the customers. This design, emblazoned with the company's famed logo which was basically a polo player, created by tennis pro René Lacoste which then became the brand's signature look. In the year 1977, Ralph Lauren Corporation launched a signature cotton mesh polo shirt in various radiant colors. This collection was featuring the polo player logo on the chest. The company stepped in online business by launching its website and online shop in the year 2000 as polo.com by RL Media which is cooperation between Ralph Lauren and NBC. This was done to make the brand global and available for everyone. In the year 2007, Ralph Lauren Corporation acquired the NBC share of RL Media resulting in relaunching of the website as ralphlauren.com.
