A metaverse is a shared, online virtual space where people can socialize and experience adventures. It's like the Internet, but it encompasses all of human civilization instead of just being able to access information from your desktop or laptop, you'd be able to explore anywhere in the world at any time. The idea behind metaspaces is that they provide an immersive environment which reduces feelings of isolation while increasing feelings of connection with others because users are always within reach through text chat or voice communication software such as Skype. In this sense metaspaces could be seen as more personal than public spaces since they allow for private conversations between individuals without interference from other people on the same network (e.g., WiFi).

The term "metaverse" was coined by the science fiction author Neal Stephenson in his book Snow Crash (1992). Since then it has appeared in many other places including films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and television series like The West Wing and Battlestar Galactica where it refers to the fictionalized concept of an interconnected networked society that uses ubiquitous wireless technology for data collection, communication, entertainment and commerce.
